Oakland Raiders: Options for Moving Forward Without Jason Campbell

In their emotional homecoming following the death of Al Davis, the Oakland Raiders defeated the struggling Cleveland Browns 24-17—but, they paid a huge price.

Starting quarterback Jason Campbell was lost for the season with a broken collar bone he suffered in the second quarter while trying to run for a first down. Campbell showed great heart, but bad judgment by diving head-first and was landed upon by a Browns’ defender.

What does this mean for the Raiders? What will head coach Hue Jackson and the front office do at the quarterback position? A lot of questions remain.

Let’s have a look at the Raiders’ options.

Option one-David Garrard: At the moment, Garrard is unemployed, so there would be no need to negotiate with another team. He has recently turned down an offer from the Miami Dolphins because they wouldn’t offer him a long enough contract. It doesn’t seem likely the Raiders would offer Garrard deal any longer than through the end of this season.

Add to this the fact that Garrard would have to take some time to learn the offense—an offense that Kyle Boller can already run better than Garrard could hope to before the end of the year. This is a risk and a time-table the Raiders can’t afford in the middle of a division title race.

Option one—not likely or wise.

Option two-Carson Palmer: The former Heisman Trophy and NCAA national champion is sitting at home because his current team, the Cincinnati Bengals are refusing to trade him as he requested. There is virtually no chance the Bengals’ head man, Mike Brown is going to budge on his current stance on Palmer—whether or not it makes any sense.

Palmer is likely very rusty and would also have to learn the playbook. Gaining chemistry with new receivers and offensive linemen is difficult enough, but to accomplish this while working back into “football shape” would be nearly impossible.

Option two—not a good idea.

Option three-Terrelle Pryor: The only player taken in the NFL Supplemental draft this season, Pryor has served is five-game suspension and is cleared to practice and play with the Raiders—but, that doesn’t mean he should.

Pryor hasn’t taken a single snap in the NFL. The learning curve for any college quarterback is steep, but for a player coming from a “spread offense,” that left after his sophomore year of college it’s even more difficult.

Option three—not the answer.

Option four-Kyle Boller: Remembering back to the 1999 “Greatest Show on Turf,” when Trent Green went down in the preseason, Rams head coach Dick Vermeil said, “We will rally around Kurt Warner, and we will play good football.” That worked out pretty well—a Super Bowl victory.

The Raiders should take a book from the Vermeil playbook and stick to the “Next Man Up” philosophy coach Jackson has been preaching all year long. Anything else would diminish the respect he has with the team, it would defeat the confidence the team has in all the back ups, and would ruin the chemistry Jackson has worked so hard to create.

Option four—the best option for the team.
